CONFIRMED | President Mugabe Resigns

Zimbabwe's President, Robert Mugabe, has finally resigned, the speaker of the country's Parliament said, bringing an end to his 37 years of rule.

The announcement came as Parliament began proceedings to impeach him, six days after the military seized control in the capital, Harare.

Mugabe's resignation has sparked wild jubilation on the streets...

He resigned as president on Tuesday. The 93-year old clung on for a week after an army takeover and expulsion from ruling ZANU-PF party, which also told him to leave power.

Wild celebrations broke out at a joint sitting of parliament when Speaker Jacob Mudenda announced Mr Mugabe's resignation and suspended the impeachment procedure.

The origin of Mr Mugabe's sudden downfall lies in rivalry between members of Zimbabwe's ruling elite over who will succeed him, rather than popular protests against his rule.

According to CNN, Mugabe's resignation marks the an end of an era in Zimbabwe - he ruled the country with an iron fist for almost four decades and is the only leader the nation has known since it achieved independence from Britain in 1980.
